Does my 1yr old need to have a car seat on an airplane?

im flying from texas to virgina & this will be my first time on a plane. Idk how all that stuff works, ill b bringing my sons stroller but does he need a car seat too...if so, can i rent one from the airlines so i wont have 2 carry the stroller & suitcases?
