Thinking About Moving Across the Country for College?

I'm thinking about moving from Virginia to California for college. How hard would this be, not knowing anyone out there, having a couple of suitcases and everything? I would also need a car or bicycle? I have a car but it just doesn't see realistic to drive. How could I get larger stuff there anyway? I think it would be a really good experience it I could do it! My family would of course fly me in for holidays, the summer and everything, but I just don't know how everything would work?
